NBA All Star Game tribute to Kobe

The 69th NBA All-Star Game is coming up this weekend, among a number of other weekend festivities, and will occur on Sunday, February 16 beginning at 8 PM EST.

The NBA announced on social media that this year's format would be different, and include every quarter counting for charity, while also honoring the late Kobe Bryant.

Team LeBron will take on Team Giannis in Chicago, IL at the United Center, and fans can expect an interesting and hopefully competitive game.

The two teams will be competing to win each of the first three quarters. Each quarter will start at 0-0 and last exactly 12 minutes. The game clock will be turned off to start the fourth quarter and a final "target score" will be determined.

Specifically, the target score will be determined by taking the leading team's final and cumulative score of the first three quarters and adding 24 points. That total creates the target score, and the first team to reach that score in an untimed fourth quarter wins the game.

The reason for the 24 points is to honor the late Kobe Bryant who wore that jersey number the last ten seasons of his playing career.

To give a good example, let's say that Team LeBron has a cumulative score of 95 points through the first three quarters and Team Giannis has 90. The new format would add 24 points to each team's total, or a 119 Target Score for Team LeBron and a 114 Target Score for Team Giannis. If, for example, Team Giannis scores 114 total points before Team LeBron scores 119, they would be the victor. The untimed fourth quarter, however it goes, and the game, would end with either a field goal or a free throw.

It's easy to see how this could make the All-Star game more competitive. It's fun, different, and most importantly, the game benefits charity. In fact, more than $1 million in charity contributions will benefit Chicago community non-profit organizations through NBA Cares outreach efforts.
