The NBA might as well be in a galaxy far-far away from the Bubble down in Disney World. The league created additional COVID-19 protocols after many more games have been postponed after the new year. The Celtics alone have had their last three games postponed. The 76ers played the Nuggets with only seven players on their roster and were reportedly upset that the NBA didn't postpone the game. They predictably lost handedly.

The new protocols include no physical interactions with opposing players, reducing social interaction for everyone and stricter enforcement of masks for coaches and players on the bench. These new restrictions are supposed to last for at least the next two weeks but there may be much more that needs to be implemented to course correct a season that is quickly being derailed by postponements.

The Nets and Knicks will play on and these two teams are moving in the direction that we've been wanting for New York basketball since the Knicks won two championships in the early 70s and the Nets were playing in Long Island at the same time. While the Knicks aren't blowing anyone away, new head coach Tom Thibodeau is developing this young core as they started the season 5-3. They have lost their last three games though as RJ Barrett is slumping and their offense has followed suit.

The Nets might have bigger problems of their own as Kyrie Irving mysteriously hasn't played in a week. It is being speculated that Irving was seen at a family gathering without wearing a mask. This is alleged and the NBA is investigating video evidence. Either way, he will not be joining his team for at least the rest of the week. This will be however the first time Kevin Durant plays against the Knicks after he passed on playing with them in free agency in the summer of 2019. That is reason enough to tune in as his choice already seems like the best move for KD and New York basketball in general.

The ESPN double-header includes two of the most intriguing teams in the West. First, Zion Williamson is every bit of the human highlight reel we expected him to be when he was drafted by the Pelicans. But for the first time in his career he is not injured or put on a minutes restriction since he was at Duke. While the future potential for this team is immense, they've been mediocre so far and they might not change against the Clippers. Steven Adams and Eric Bledsoe, their new editions in the offseason and Lonzo Ball, who likely will become a free agent after this season are both questionable to go in this one. Looks like Zion will have even more put on his shoulders.

As for the Clippers, they've had more expectations on them more than Zion when Kawhi and Paul George suited up for their hometown. Everyone knows they blew a 3-1 lead in the playoffs last year and the time seems to already be running out on this core. But they are off to a good start going 7-4 and have largely rebounded from an early loss to the Mavericks where they were outscored by 51. They didn't panic and are showing their resilience. Maybe that's the difference so far under new head coach Tyronn Lue. Or it could just be really early in the season. This team still has a lot to prove. A statement win against the up and coming Pelicans could be a good sign for things to come as they continue to chase the ever elusive Lakers for first place in the Pacific division.
