This is the matchup of the year of what could have been. Going into this season, no one would have figured we’d be in this place for both the Dallas Mavericks and Philadelphia 76ers. No one in Dallas needs reminding that the Mavs were in the Finals last season. Now they’ve lost four of their last five and are two-games under .500 in an unprecedented season. Dallas will be trying to avoid losing three in a row today. Philadelphia is trying to avoid losing four in a row and the Sixers have also lost four of their last five. With the addition of Paul George, Philly looked like they had all of the pieces to go to the Finals. That hasn’t even close to materialized with injuries plaguing both of these teams. The Mavericks will still be the 6.5-point favorites at home Sunday.

This was a close matchup back at the beginning of February when the Sixers won 118-116 in Philadelphia. Joel Embiid had a triple-double in his first game back in more than a month. That seems like a lifetime ago already. Philly is coming off a 112-100 loss against the Indiana Pacers on Friday. Jeff Dowtin Jr. led the 76ers with 24 points but it wasn’t enough to hold off Pascal Siakam who scored 17 of his game-high 27 points in the second half. The Sixers played without Embiid, George and Tyrese Maxey and will be on the road for the next six games.
The Mavericks are coming off a 133-96 blowout to their in-state rivals the Houston Rockets on Friday. Tari Eason scored a career and game-high of 30 points to help the Rockets run away with it. Brandon Williams had a good showing leading Dallas with 26 points. Dallas lost Dante Exum with a broken hand and Klay Thompson went 2 for 16 with only five points. Hopefully things will turn around quickly next year for both of these franchises.
