The Cleveland Cavaliers were the best team in the Eastern Conference during the 2024-25 season but crashed out of the playoffs with a five-game loss to the Indiana Pacers in the Eastern Conference Semifinals. The Cavs open their preseason on Tuesday night with the first game of a home-and-home against the Chicago Bulls at Rocket Arena in Cleveland. The Bulls won 15 of their final 20 games last season to last in the play-in tournament before getting blown out at home by the Miami Heat.

Cleveland moved on from backup point guard Ty Jerome, opting to trade wing Isaac Okoro to Chicago for veteran Lonzo Ball, who returned to the NBA last season after missing more than two years recovering from a knee injury. The Cavs also brought back veteran Larry Nance Jr. and signed Thomas Bryant for depth up front and retained free-agent wing Sam Merrill. The team’s core of Evan Mobley, Jarrett Allen and All-Star guards Donovan Mitchell and Darius Garland remains intact.

The Bulls drafted 6-foot-10 forward Noa Essengue from France with the 12th overall pick, got younger by trading Ball for Okoro and re-signed free agent Tre Jones. Their biggest offseason splash was signing Josh Giddey to a four-year, $100 million extension. Chicago still has center Nikola Vučević, effective as a stretch big, and veteran guard Coby White made a leap down the stretch, scoring 20 points in 18 of 19 games from Feb. 28 to April 6 with six 35-plus outings in that span.

White (calf) has been limited in training camp while the Cavs don’t have a timetable for the returns of Garland (toe) or Max Strus (foot).
