Once again the West’s top seed, the record-setting Oklahoma City Thunder take on the Memphis Grizzlies to open the first round

The Oklahoma City Thunder set a franchise record with 68 wins en route to running away with the top seed in the Western Conference playoffs and open their postseason on Sunday when they host the No. 8-seeded Memphis Grizzlies in Game 1 of their first-round series at Paycom Center in Oklahoma City. The Thunder shattered the NBA record for scoring differential this season, outscoring their opponents by 12.9 points per game to top the mark set by the legendary 1971-72 Los Angeles Lakers of 12.3. Memphis got into the playoffs with a victory over the Dallas Mavericks on Friday night in the play-in tournament.

Oklahoma City was also the West’s top seed in 2024 before losing in six games to the Mavericks in the Western Conference Semifinals. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander led the NBA with 32.7 points per game while also getting 6.4 assists a night while Jalen Williams dropped 21.6 points a contest but missed the final two games of the regular season nursing a hip injury. Isaiah Hartenstein put up 11.2 points and 10.7 rebounds per game and Chet Holmgren, limited to 32 games, averaged 15.0 points and 2.2 blocks.

Ja Morant fought through a sprained right ankle on Friday, finishing with 22 points and nine assists in the Grizzlies’ 120-106 win over Dallas to claim the eighth seed. Memphis is back in the playoffs after missing the party last season but finished 4-5 under interim coach Tuomas Iisalo. Morant averaged 23.2 points and 7.3 assists and Jaren Jackson Jr. put up 22.2 points a night. Rookie Zach Edey led the team with 8.3 rebounds an outing.

The Thunder swept four meetings from the Grizzlies in the regular season, winning each by double digits. At home, OKC got a 130-116 win on Dec. 29 and a 125-104 victory on March 27, while also winning 125-112 at Memphis on Feb. 8 and claiming a 120-103 road win on March 5.
