The Phoenix Suns host the Sacramento Kings on Wednesday for their season opener, as both teams look to make a run back to the playoffs.

The Phoenix Suns and Sacramento Kings kick-off their season on Wednesday night in this Western Conference showdown. This is the second night of the opening week of the NBA. The Kings are trying to take the next step after taking a step backward last season. Sacramento has made the Play-In Tournament the last two seasons after making the playoffs in 2023 for the first time in 16 seasons. Kings fans are clamoring for more after losing in the first round of those playoffs to the Warriors.

The 2025-26 team is very similar to last season’s with the main draws being Zach LaVine, DeMar DeRozan and Domontas Sabonis. Sabonis is deemed out for this game with a hamstring injury. Hopefully for the Kings he will just be out for one week. This is a team that finished ninth in the West last year and two games under .500. The Kings lost their center in Jonas Valanciunas, who is now with the Denver Nuggets. Russell Westbrook was the most marquee name the Kings added in the offseason. This team is getting older and is going into its first full season without its star De’Aaron Fox. Can Sacramento avoid missing out on the playoffs for the third straight year?

Phoenix is coming off a much more disappointing season than the Kings. With the Big Three Phoenix had, it was one of the most disappointing performances in recent NBA memory. From 2020-24, the Suns made the playoffs, including a trip to the Finals. After not winning a playoff round in 2024, the Suns were expected to gel and take the next step of being one of the top contenders in the West. Instead, Phoenix finished 10 games under .500 and Kevin Durant signed with the Rockets in the offseason. Bradley Beal couldn’t stay healthy enough to make a significant impact on the court and now he is playing for the Los Angeles Clippers.

Really the only consistency through all of this is Devin Booker, who signed an extension through 2030. The biggest thing to come in the offseason is what they got back in the Durant trade, including former Rockets promising guard Jalen Green and the No. 10 pick Khaman Maluach. The Suns certainly got younger, and it looks like they are still committed to building around Booker. It might take this team some time to develop beyond this season, but it is likely to work much more than this most recent Big Three ever did.
