The Los Angeles Lakers are hoping to avoid back-to-back defeats at the Target Center on Sunday after Anthony Edwards and Jayden McDaniels’ late surge sparked Minnesota to a series lead in the NBA play-offs. The two teams were tied with a little more than four minutes to play in Game 3 of the first-round series on Friday, but their clutch duo came up trumps in the closing stages to round out a 116-104 victory. Minnesota won both of its home fixtures against the Lakers during the regular season and faces a prime opportunity to clinch a two-game lead this weekend.

Chris Finch’s side showed the kind of grit often evident in championship teams in Game 3, putting LeBron James and an ill Luka Doncic to the sword when it mattered most.

Naz Reid also played a big role in keeping the west-coast giants at bay in the latter stages, but the majority of the plaudits went to star duo Edwards and McDaniels, who clocked 30 points on the night:

Doncic was clearly struggling as he could be seen clutching his stomach while chatting to Lakers medical staff after the half-time interval.

That still didn’t prevent the Slovenian superstar ending his night with 17 points, seven rebounds, eight assists, one steal and one block from 40 minutes in play, however.

All eyes will be on whether his condition has improved – or as many Lakers may fear, worsened – leading into Sunday’s Game 4 fracas, with James potentially having to pick up even more of the burden dependent on that outcome.

The Lakers are hoping to avoid consecutive first-round exits in the play-offs after losing 4-1 to the Denver Nuggets this time last year.

Minneapolis hasn’t been a happy hunting ground for the team of late, however, having failed to win any of their last four trips to the Target Center, with their last win there coming in March 2023.
