Brooklyn, deep in a rebuild, has struggled defensively in its first two games, surrendering 133.5 points per game and ranking 29th of the 30 NBA teams in defensive rating. The Spurs are further along in their rebuild, with a young core led by 2023 No. 1 overall pick Victor Wembanyama.

Wembanyama missed a potential game-winner at the end of regulation on Friday night before San Antonio took a 120-116 overtime win over the New Orleans Pelicans. Wembanyama finished with 29 points, 11 rebounds and nine blocked shots while Devin Vassell scored 23 points in the win. New addition Luke Kornet went for 14 points and 12 boards off the bench and No. 2 overall pick Dylan Harper scored 13.

The Nets never led in their home opener on Friday night, losing to the Cleveland Cavaliers 131-124. Cam Thomas finished with 33 points and nine assists and Michael Porter Jr. added 31 points in his debut at home. Ziaire Williams poured in 25 points in 27 minutes off the bench in a game Brooklyn trailed by as much as 25 points.

Kelly Olynyk (heel) and Jeremy Sochan (wrist) are game-time decisions for the Spurs while De’Aaron Fox (hamstring) remains out. Brooklyn won’t have Haywood Highsmith (knee) until December at the earliest, while rookies Drake Powell (ankle) and Danny Wolf (ankle) are game-time decisions for Sunday.
