After a wild sequence and tough double-overtime loss, the Denver Nuggets will host the San Antonio Spurs on Wednesday.

The Denver Nuggets might be facing off against the San Antonio Spurs at the perfect time. The Spurs have lost five in a row and Denver is going to need a pick-me-up after losing to the Minnesota Timberwolves on Tuesday 140-139 in double overtime. Minnesota completed the season series sweep against the Nuggets in the process. Granted it was in two overtime quarters but the Timberwolves were still able to win despite Nikola Jokic scoring 61 points. That is a career-high for the best player in the NBA and the highest point total in the league this season. Jokic didn’t leave the floor after halftime and secured the triple-double with 10 assists and 10 rebounds.

The loss was particularly difficult to swallow against the Timberwolves because the Nuggets were up by as much as 16 and they had a great chance to cement the game at the end of double overtime. With 17.7 seconds left on the clock, Minnesota was down one with the ball. But Anthony Edwards quickly turned over the ball. Russell Westbrook secured it and rushed down the court looking like he was going to ice the game with an easy layup. Except the ball didn’t go in and the Timberwolves scooped up the rebound. Westbrook didn’t technically need to shoot but there was still time to defend. Nickeil Alexander-Walker took the last shot for Minnesota and missed it, but Westbrook fouled him behind the three-point line. Alexander-Walker would hit two of his three free throws to win the game with just .1 seconds on the clock.

The Spurs are coming off a 116-105 loss at home against the Orlando Magic on Tuesday. Paolo Banchero and Franz Wagner both scored 24 to help the Magic rally late against San Antonio. Harrison Barnes also tied for the game lead, scoring 24 points for the Spurs. San Antonio needs every win it can get since it is not mathematically out of the 10th and final play-in spot in the West. It’s going to be a huge uphill battle though as they are five games behind Sacramento with seven games left in the regular season. Every game is a must-win now.
