After four seasons in the windy city the Chicago Bulls (3-3) traded away Lauri Markkanen. Since then the sharp-shooting big man has had an extra pep in his step against the team that drafted and then gave up on Markkanen. Now Markkanen leads the Utah Jazz (0-6) who are in the middle of a rebuild. They are also the only remaining winless team in the 2024-2025 season. Utah has clearly shifted both eyes to the future while Chicago is focused on remaining good enough led by a group of young players and others entering their primes in Zach LaVine, Coby White and Josh Giddey. That trio has shown flashes through six games keeping Chicago in the mix through the first two weeks of the season.

In his six games against Chicago between his time in Utah and with the Cleveland Cavaliers Markkanen has far and away his best individual numbers. He has averaged 24.2 points and 5.8 rebounds per game on 58-44-84 shooting splits. Chicago has gotten the better of the match-up going 5-1 in games against its former lottery pick.

This season Markkanen is off to a slower start averaging just 18.0 points and 7.3 rebounds per game. Those are both career-lows for Markkanen since joining Utah three seasons ago. Markkanen (back) is day-to-day after missing the team’s last game against the Denver Nuggets.

For Chicago the inconsistency that has plagued the team for years is still there despite the fresh coat of paint on the roster. The trio of LaVine, White and Giddey are filling up the statsheet nightly averaging a combined 58.9 points, 17.8 rebounds and 13.2 assists per game.
