Washington Wizards visit the Brooklyn Nets on Monday night at Barclays Center as preseason winds down

While the Brooklyn Nets (0-1) are ramping up their preseason schedule, the Washington Wizards (1-2) are nearing the end of theirs. The Wizards visit Brooklyn’s Barclays Center in Monday night for their next-to-last preseason tuneup. The Nets, meanwhile, will have two more games remaining after playing just their second preseason contest on Monday. Both teams have new coaches. Longtime NBA assistant Brian Keefe was kept on by Washington after finishing last season as interim head coach. Brooklyn hired Sacramento Kings assistant Jordi Fernández, a 41-year-old native of Spain who spent six seasons as an assistant with the Denver Nuggets and two more with the Kings.

The Wizards added free agent Saddiq Bey and picked up veterans Malcolm Brogdon and Jonas Valančiūnas in trades. Washington also took French national Alex Sarr with the No. 2 overall pick and added No. 14 selection Bub Carrington and No. 24 overall Kyshawn George via trade. Coming off a franchise-record 67 losses, the Wizards traded Deni Avdija to the Portland Trail Blazers in the Brogdon deal, lost free agent Tyus Jones to the Phoenix Suns and waived Landry Shamet.

The Nets are officially out of their ill-fated superteam era, sending Mikal Bridges and Keita Bates-Diop to Manhattan and the New York Knicks for former Net Bojan Bogdanović as well as Shake Milton. On the free-agent front, they added Killian Hayes. A 32-50 record landed Brooklyn in the lottery, but their pick when to the Houston Rockets from the 2021 trade for James Harden.

Already banged up, the Nets won’t have center Nic Claxton (hamstring) on Monday. Hayes (hip) is questionable while Trendon Watford (hamstring) is out at least another week, Bogdanović (foot) has no timetable for a return, and Day’Ron Sharpe (hamstring) is out at least five more weeks. Washington’s Brogdon is out until early November after thumb surgery and Bey is out until at least December after ACL surgery in March.

Regional restrictions may apply.
