The Houston Rockets play on back-to-back nights when they host the Minnesota Timberwolves on Friday.

The Houston Rockets host the Minnesota Timberwolves on Friday night for the first meeting of the season between these Western Conference foes. The Timberwolves have been moving up the conference standings and are now in fourth place, with a chance to win their third straight tonight. The Rockets have slid down the Western Conference standings, as they’ve struggled of late, losing four of their last five games. The good news for Houston is that it is still 12-3 at home, so this is a prime opportunity to bounce back. This is going to be a tough opponent, though, for the Rockets, with the Timberwolves winning six of their last seven games. Houston will have a better shot tonight as well because Anthony Edwards is listed as out for Minnesota. The Timberwolves’ star will miss this game with a foot injury. Edwards is not expected back until Jan. 19, before Minnesota plays the Utah Jazz next Tuesday. All of this considered, Houston is the 3.5-point favorite to defend home court tonight.

Minnesota is coming off a 139-106 rout of the Milwaukee Bucks on the road on Tuesday. The win was even more impressive since the team played without Edwards and Rudy Gobert. Julius Randle stepped up in their place, leading the T’Wolves with 29 points. Minnesota never trailed despite Giannis Antetokounmpo having a good night with 25 points. The Timberwolves led by 41 points in the first half. Antetokounmpo made a layup and one, and when he hit the floor, he got up and gave his home crowd a thumbs down and booed them right back after the Milwaukee fans booed the team for a lackluster performance. That is the definition of a rout by Minnesota.

The Rockets are coming off another loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder, falling 2-0 in the season series. OKC won 111-91 in the Rockets’ backyard on Thursday. The game was close until the Thunder pulled away in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Rockets 34-16. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander scored 20 points, while Chet Holmgren was right behind with 18 for the Thunder. Kevin Durant led the Rockets against his original team with 19 points. But Houston was held to shooting just 34 percent from the field and 29 percent from three. They’ll need a lot more offensive production tonight, even with a banged-up Timberwolves squad.
