This year the series returns to Knoxville for the first time since the epic 2022 game, which saw then-No. 6 Tennessee top then-No. 3 Alabama in a 52-49 shootout, hitting a game-winning field goal in the final seconds to snap a 15-year Alabama winning streak.
The stakes are just as high for this year’s game. Both Alabama and Tennessee are viewed as potential playoff teams, but haven’t been playing their best football as of late. ‘Bama lost to Vanderbilt two weeks ago, then had to come back to beat South Carolina 27-25 at home last week. Tennessee lost to Arkansas 19-14 two weeks ago, then needed overtime to beat Florida 23-17 at home last week despite the Gators losing their starting QB early in the game.
A win for either program on Saturday could be the momentum boost either team needs to get back in a rhythm. Meanwhile, the loser will need serious help to get to the SEC Championship Game, which would complicate that team’s path to the College Football Playoff and make any other losses practically postseason eliminators.
