Can Auburn follow up last week’s upset over Texas A&M with a rivalry win over No. 13 Alabama in the Iron Bowl?

Saturday afternoon sees one of the best rivalries in college football return, with Auburn (5-6, 2-5 SEC) traveling to Saban Field at Bryant-Denny Stadium to take on No. 13 Alabama (8-3, 4-3 SEC) in the 89th playing of the Iron Bowl. Alabama leads the all-time series 50-37 with a tie, and has won four in a row. That includes an absolute classic last year when the Crimson Tide converted a 4th & goal from the 31 yard line with under a minute to go to steal a 27-24 win at Auburn and preserve their playoff chances.

This year Alabama will likely need more than just a win against Auburn to have a chance to play for a National Championship. The Crimson Tide were in good position until last week when they lost 24-3 at Oklahoma. Now at No. 13 in the latest poll – and with the fifth auto-bid conference champion looking like they’ll come from below that ranking meaning the Tide need to move up. External help aside though, they obviously can’t do that without taking care of business themselves on Saturday.

For whatever playoff odds remain for Alabama, the Crimson Tide need to be weary of Auburn playing spoiler. Last week the Tigers came up with a major upset win at home, knocking off a No. 20 Texas A&M team that looked bound for an SEC Championship Game appearance (the Aggies now need to beat Texas to clinch a bid). Auburn came up clutch multiple times in that game, winning 43-41 in four overtimes.

Kickoff for this one is set for 3:30 p.m. ET on Saturday. Catch the coverage on ABC.
