No. 14 SMU looks to hold onto the top spot in the ACC standings when Boston College comes to town for a conference matchup on Saturday.

Could No. 14 SMU (8-1, 5-0 ACC) capture the ACC title in its first year? After No. 9 Miami’s loss to Georgia Tech last week, the Mustangs are the only team left in the ACC without a conference loss. That gives them the inside track to a conference championship game appearance. Given they still sit outside the top 12 in the College Football Playoff rankings, they may need that to earn a spot in the inaugural tournament. However with two one-loss teams (Miami and No. 20 Clemson) behind them in the standings, they don’t have much margin for error. It’ll be important for them to close strong down the stretch, starting this Saturday when Boston College (5-4, 2-3 ACC) pays them a visit.

It’s been a well-rounded effort from SMU this year. The Mustangs rank second in the ACC in both scoring offense (averaging 40.1 points per game) and scoring defense (allowing 21.8 points per game). Last week the Mustangs had a bye, and last time out they beat Pitt 48-25 two weeks ago.

The Mustangs will face a Boston College team in the midst of a quarterback change. Last week the Eagles benched starter Thomas Castellanos, and this week head coach Bill O’Brien announced Grayson James – who replaced Castellanos last week – is now the starting quarterback. James went 5-of-6 for 51 yards and a touchdown in BC’s comeback win over Syracuse last week.
