The Holy War rivalry returns with significant stakes this Saturday as No. 9 BYU visits in-state foe Utah. Watch free on Fubo.

There’s a long history in the in-state rivalry between No. 9 BYU (8-0, 5-0 Big 12) and Utah (4-4, 1-4 Big 12). Known as the Holy War, these two teams have met 101 times since 1896. This year’s meeting holds a little extra weight though. For one, it’s the first matchup between the two teams since the latest round of conference realignment which puts both schools in the Big 12. This resumes what was once an annual rivalry, although the game hasn’t been played since 2021. BYU won that matchup 26-17, putting an end to a nine-game Utah winning streak.

With this matchup being a conference game this year there are raised stakes – especially for BYU. The Cougars are currently the only unbeaten team left in the Big 12, giving them the inside track to the conference championship game. They’re in position to not just make the College Football Playoff but earn a bye in the first round if they win out, and realistically this game on the road at a rival represents their biggest remaining challenge for the regular season.

While Utah’s record may not reflect the level of competitiveness the team has shown in recent years they’re still a tough test – especially in Salt Lake City. Kyle Whittingham’s defense is still tough to crack, with the Utes ranking second in the Big 12 allowing 16.5 points per game through eight games this season. BYU comes into the game ranking second on offense, averaging 35.1 points per game.
