The Gamecocks are coming off a 31-30 loss to Texas A&M last week to drop to 3-7 on the season. The toughest pill to swallow was that South Carolina was up 30-3 at halftime against the No. 3 team in the nation. At its peak, South Carolina had a 97.8 percent chance to win in the third quarter. It was the biggest comeback in the storied history of Texas A&M. The Gamecocks fell to 1-7 in the SEC in the process, and now they’ll be trying to end a five-game losing streak. South Carolina has also 1-7 in its last eight games, beating Kentucky in that span. This won’t exactly be a walk in the park either against Coastal Carolina, because the Chanticleers are 6-4 and second in the Sun Belt – East. Coastal Carolina is 5-2 in conference play, and are only behind James Madison who is 9-1 overall and 7-1 in the Sun Belt. This would be the biggest win of the season if the Chanticleers could pull off the road upset, before they play James Madison next week. The good news for the Gamecocks is that they are the huge favorite, with a -24.5-points spread in their favor.

The game against Texas A&M was tied early with a field goal apiece, but then South Carolina exploded for 27 unanswered points to end the first half. No one would have guessed what the second half had in store. The Aggies’ offense came alive, with QB Marcel Reed finishing the day with a career-high 439 yards, and added three touchdowns. Entering the game, teams were 0-286 since 2004 when trailing in an SEC game by 27 points or more. The Gamecocks still had time to avoid the historic comeback, with the ball with three minutes left after a fumble recovery. But QB LaNorris Sellers was sacked on consecutive plays to bring up a fourth-and-long try for South Carolina. Sellers was able to scramble for a ways, but ultimately came up short to end the game. Sellers finished the game with 246 passing yards, with two touchdowns and an interception. South Carolina can’t get caught with a hangover, as it will finish its season with two in-state rivalry matchups.

Coastal Carolina’s four-game winning streak was snapped in a close one-score game, in a 45-40 loss to Georgia Southern last week. The Chanticleers just could not slow down Eagles’ running back OJ Arnold, who rushed for an astonishing 267 yards with four touchdowns. It didn’t help that Georgia Southern’s receiver Camden Brown had a program-tying three touchdown receptions. Arnold truly did it all with a 41-yard touchdown catch and he threw a 73-yard TD pass to Brown. Coastal Carolina put up 482 yards, but it was still outpaced by 653 yards from the Eagles. The Chanticleers didn’t lead once in the game, but it had several ties and only down one score for much of the game. Running back Dominic Knicely scored a touchdown to get within five with 11:32 left in the game, but Coastal Carolina couldn’t muster any more offense. The defense is going to have to show out more, if the Chanticleers are to pull off this monster SEC upset.
