MEAC champion South Carolina State takes on SWAC champ Jackson State at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta

The de facto national championship of HBCU football is set for Saturday afternoon at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta for the Cricket Celebration Bowl. The champions of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference and Southwestern Athletic Conference collide for the ninth edition of the bowl, which launched in 2015. South Carolina State (9-2) has won its last eight games and finished unbeaten in the MEAC while Jackson State (11-2) comes in with nine straight victories and clinched the SWAC title a week ago. The Bulldogs have six claimed Black national titles, most recently in 2021, while the Tigers claim three, with the last coming in 1996.

Jackson State broke away from visiting Southern in the second half of the SWAC championship game on Dec. 7 for a 41-13 victory. Five different Tigers found the end zone and the offense piled up 275 rushing yards, led by Irv Mulligan’s 116 on 23 carries. Mulligan scored on the ground, as did Zy McDonald, Travis Terrell Jr. and Emari Matthews, while McDonald connected with Joanes Fortilien on a 13-yard TD pass. Mulligan leads the team with 1,174 rushing yards and 11 scores while quarterback Jacobian Morgan has 2,003 yards to go with 19 touchdowns and seven interceptions but his status is uncertain after he went down with an injury last week. Joshua Nobles paces the defense with 10 sacks.

South Carolina State capped its 5-0 run through the MEAC with a 53-21 win over visiting Norfolk State on Nov. 23. Ryan Stubblefield, starting in place of injured Eric Phoenix, threw for two touchdowns and ran for two more in the win. He finished 18-of-25 for 264 yards while running for another 41. KZ Adams ran for three scores, finishing with 128 yards on 18 carries while Justin Smith-Brown caught seven balls for 101 yards. Phoenix was named the HBCU+ National Player of the Year, throwing for 2,460 yards and 20 touchdowns, while Caden High has 58 catches for 892 yards and seven scores. Ashaad Hall brings the pressure with 11 sacks.

The Bulldogs are 3-2 all-time in the series, with Jackson State winning the most recent matchup 37-7 on Aug. 26, 2023, at Center Parc Stadium in Atlanta. South Carolina State coach Chennis Berry is in his first season at the helm while T.C. Taylor is 18-6 in his second year leading the Tigers.
