After norrowingly missing out on the College Football Playoff as the second team on the bubble, No. 14 Ole Miss squares off against Duke in the Gator Bowl in Jacksonville on Thursday. Following an upset win over No. 2 Georgia, Ole Miss had a puncher’s chance of making the first-ever 12-team playoff. However, the Rebels missed out on a chance to compete for a national championship due to their three losses at 9-3 overall with a 5-3 mark in SEC play this season. Duke, on the other hand, finished the season on a three-game winning streak to improve to 9-3 overall with conference wins over NC State, Virginia Tech, and Wake Forest to end the year. This is the first-ever meeting between Ole Miss and Duke in the series history.

Most recently, Ole Miss won its final game of the regular season with a 26-14 victory over longtime rival Mississippi State in Oxford on Nov. 29. The Egg Bowl didn’t disappoint, turning into mostly a defensive battle, with Ole Miss holding its in-state rival to 330 total yards of offense while forcing three MSU turnovers in the win. 

As for Duke, the Blue Devils also won their rivalry game in a 23-17 victory over Wake Forest in Winston-Salem on Nov. 30. Duke quarterback Maalik Murphy connected with Jordan Moore as time expired on a 39-yard touchdown pass to cap off a 14-point comeback for Duke. It was Duke’s first-ever walk-off touchdown and its fourth final-snap victory in program history.
