Missouri Southern (3-4) ended a four-game losing streak last week and looks for a second consecutive victory on Saturday afternoon when it hosts Missouri Western (1-6) for homecoming at Fred G. Hughes Stadium in Joplin, Missouri. The Griffons come in with five consecutive losses and are 0-5 in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association while the Lions improved to 1-4 in the MIAA with last week’s win. Missouri Western last won the MIAA title in 2012 before losing in the NCAA Division II quarterfinals while Missouri Southern hasn’t copped the conference title since 1993.

The Lions took a 17-0 lead into the fourth quarter and hung on to beat visiting Nebraska-Kearney 24-16 last week. Tillman Martin finished 10-of-15 with 175 yards and two touchdowns, one each to Draper Parker and Nathan Glades, while RJ Hill got Missouri Southern’s first touchdown with a 70-yard interception return early in the second quarter. It was one of two picks on the day for Hill.

The Griffons dropped a 44-20 decision at home last week to then-No. 12 Pittsburg State. Missouri Western took a 7-3 lead in the second quarter on Kane Donovan’s 16-yard touchdown pass to Bryce Marcus III before the Gorillas ran off 17 straight points to take control of the game. Donovan was just 13-of-34 for 189 yards but threw for two scores, both to Marcus, while Evan Williams found the end zone on a two-yard run on his only carry of the game.

Missouri Western won last year’s meeting 35-27 at home and has won 10 of the last 11 matchups between the teams to take a 30-24 edge in the all-time series.
