Both Mount Union and North Central (Ill.) are looking to preserve their undefeated records on Sunday night when they face off in the National Championship – Stagg Bowl LI for the Division III National Championship. This is North Central College’s fifth straight Stagg Bowl and the Cardinals will be looking for their third championship. These two have met four times and all of those meetings have occured in the postseason. These two most recently played in 2022 where the Cardinals fended off a Mount Union comeback and won their second national title, 28-21. North Central is ranked No. 1 in the nation in Division III while Mount Union is No. 3. Both teams have a 14-0 record heading into this title game.

The Cardinals looked the most impressive on their way to this title game beating 12-2 Susquehanna University (Pennsylvania) in the semifinal round in an astounding 66-0 final. It was North Central’s largest margin of victory in a playoff game and the game tied the Division III record for the largest margin in a semifinal round. They did not let their opponent past the 50-yard line until the third quarter.

The Cardinals scored on their first nine possessions in the absolute rout. Quarterback Luke Lehnen threw for four touchdowns and 275 yards. The team accumulated for 638 total yards and only gave up 135 all game. North Central was even better on the ground rushing for 352 yards. There were three rushers who scored for the Cardinals with Jordan Williams rushing for the most for 106 yards. With the blowout alone, North Central should be the favorite to win the title tonight.

Mount Union’s offense was no slouch either winnings its semifinal game against Johns Hopkins (12-2), 45-37. Mount Union never trailed in the game but each team was prolific on offense each racking up more than 500 yards. Running back Tyler Echeverry was the star of the game going for a carrer-high 183 yards which was his ninth 100+-yard rushing game of the year. The Purple Raiders will be playing for their record 14th National Championship tonight. Expect another offensive shootout tonight with a lot of those yards coming on the ground for both teams.
