Nebraska looks to continue to prove they are for real and win three Big 10 games in a row when they take on Minnesota on Friday night.

This game means a lot more to Nebraska than probably any game this season for the Cornhuskers, when they travel to take on Minnesota in this Big 10 rivalry on Friday night. The Huskers were ranked in the low 20s with a 5-1 record this time last year. They are now 5-1 and have cracked into the top 25 in the AP poll for the first time in 10 years. In 2024, Nebraska lost 56-7 against No. 16 Indiana, in a string of losing five of six games to end the regular season. The Huskers will wear the same all-white uniforms which they wore against the Hoosiers, to prove they aren’t a jinx. You can feel that this game means something more. This is Year 3 under head coach Matt Rhule, and with Temple and Baylor that was the year those programs turned the corner. This game is inflection point for the Huskers, especially with all the chatter this week of Rhule going back to coach his alma mater after the season in the wake of Penn State head coach James Franklin getting fired by the Nittany Lions. The school’s athletic director Patrick Kraft was the Temple AD when Rhule was the head coach of the Owls. It is not a given that Rhule will go back to the school he loves where he played linebacker for Joe Paterno in the 90s. But there is potential for distraction for the Huskers not to take care of business against Minnesota. This is in no way a gimmie for Nebraska, with the Gophers holding home field advantage and the fact that Minnesota has won the last five matchups in a row against the Huskers. Despite all of the noise, Nebraska is still the -7.5-point favorite against 4-2 Minnesota tonight.

If this were the past few years, Nebraska would have likely lost its last game which was a 34-31 victory against Maryland. QB Dylan Riola threw three interceptions, and the Huskers blew two 10-point leads. With a 10-point lead late in the second, Riola threw his first interception which the Terrapins turned into a field goal before the half. It was a streak of 17 consecutive points scored by Maryland. Many Husker fans must have been saying here we go again. But Riola showed tremendous poise, throwing for four touchdowns on the day. None were bigger than a three-yard pass to Dane Key with just 1:08 left in the fourth to cap off a seven-play 81-yard touchdown drive to take the lead. The Nebraska defense came up clutch too, as the Huskers outscored the Terrapins 10-0 in the final quarter. This Husker team is starting to turn the corner proving it can win tight games. Losing the turnover battle two games in a row isn’t going to pan out though against the Gophers.

Minnesota is coming off a nice bounce-back game in a 27-20 win over Purdue last week. It was a much needed morale boost after dropping 42-3 against Ohio State the week prior on the road. The Gophers won despite being outgained 456-262. It was the Minnesota defense that was clutch in the victory, with Koi Perich returning an interception for the go-ahead touchdown in the fourth quarter. The Gophers got down 10-0 but rallied to tie it midway through the second quarter. Minnesota got down by a touchdown in the third, but outscored the Boilermakers 14-0 in a crucial fourth quarter. The Gophers will need to be much more prolific on offense though tonight, if they’re going to defend home turf against the Huskers.
