Northern Iowa hits the road for the first time to visit St. Thomas on Saturday in St. Paul, Minnesota

Northern Iowa (1-0) missed the FCS playoffs last season for a second straight year, just the second time since the turn of the century the Panthers have been on the outside looking in for consecutive tournaments. On Saturday, UNI hits the road to visit St. Thomas (0-1) at O’Shaughnessy Stadium in St. Paul, Minnesota. The Tommies are still transitioning to Division I after moving up from the Division III level in 2021. The Panthers won the only other meeting between the programs in September 2021.

Northern Iowa got its season off on the right foot on Aug. 31 with a 35-7 thumping of visiting Valparaiso. Tye Edwards scored on runs of 54 and 12 yards, finishing the day with 174 yards in 15 carries while Amauri Pesek-Hickson also hit the century mark with 100 yards on 17 attempts and caught a touchdown pass as well. Aidan Dunne was an economical 12-of-17 for 116 yards and three scores.

The Tommies struggled offensively in a 34-13 loss at home to Division II Sioux Falls on Aug. 29. St. Thomas finished with just 172 yards of total offense, including just 22 on the ground, as its 31-game homefield winning streak came crashing to an end. Quarterbacks Michael Rostberg and Tak Tateoka combined for 150 yards on 14-of-35 passing with a touchdown and an interception.

Last season, the Tommies finished 8-3, including a 7-1 mark in the Pioneer Football League, but are ineligible for postseason play until 2026. The Panthers were 6-5, including 5-3 in the rugged Missouri Valley Football Conference.
