After beating Kansas State in Ireland, Iowa State gets back home to host South Dakota for its home opener on Saturday.

No. 22 Iowa State looks to keep up their momentum from last season and hit the ground running when it hosts South Dakota for this home opener on Saturday. The Cyclones have already played a game this season after facing off against their Big 12 rival No. 17 Kansas State last week. Rocco Becht took control of the offense for Iowa State, throwing for two scores and reaching the end zone another time with his legs. The game was a big one in many regards, as Iowa State and KSU battled in Dublin, Ireland for the Aer Lingus College Football Classic. On another note, the win was head coach Matt Campbell’s 100th career victory.

The Wildcats were shutout in the first and third quarters, which was the difference in the game with KSU nearly pulling off the comeback. The Cyclones are coming off a very promising season where they finished 11-3 in 2024. Iowa State went 6-1 at home and 7-2 in conference play. The season ended on an extremely high note with Iowa State beating No. 15 Miami in the Pop-Tarts Bowl. ISU beat Miami 42-41 after coming back from a 10-point deficit in the second half, after the Cyclones won with less than a minute left. The Cyclones will be the considerable -14.5 point favorite to defend home turf this afternoon.

This will be South Dakota’s first game of the season. The Coyotes had a very good season as well, matching that same 11-3 finish. South Dakota went 7-1 in conference play and 8-0 at home. South Dakota lost to No. 1 seed Montana State in the semifinal of the FCS Playoffs 31-17. If Iowa State is looking ahead to Iowa next week, the Cyclones are going to be in some serious trouble because the Coyotes have proven they can hang with nearly any team they face.
