Specifically in Brookings, where No. 2 South Dakota (6-1, 4-0 MVFC) visits No. 3 South Dakota State (5-2, 4-1 MVFC) in the 117th playing of the South Dakota Showdown. These teams finished first and second in the conference last year, with South Dakota State taking the title after beating South Dakota in what was the Coyotes’ only conference loss of the season.

This year, South Dakota comes in with the advantage after winning the first four conference games on its schedule. South Dakota State was on the track do have done the same, but got tripped up last week and fell on the road to No. 1 North Dakota State 13-9. Given that, a South Dakota win would give the Coyotes a significant upper hand on their in-state rival in the conference standings.

To get there though, the Coyotes will have to flip the script on the Jackrabbits. South Dakota State leads this series 57-52 (with seven ties) all-time, but has dominated as of late. The Jackrabbits have won each of the last two games – including a 37-3 win last year – and 10 of the last 12 meetings. With the game getting canceled in 2020 due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, the Coyotes having won in Brookings since 2000.
