South Florida made Alabama sweat it out during their meeting in Tampa last year. Now, the Bulls head to Bryant-Denny Stadium on Saturday.
One of the most surprising results in college football last year wasn’t even an upset, but a near upset in a non-conference game. As part of a two-for-one home and road agreement, Alabama (1-0, 0-0 SEC) went to Raymond James Stadium to face South Florida (1-0, 0-0 AAC) in Week 3. Alabama came in as 34.5-point favorites but the game was tied 3-3 at halftime and the Bulls had the Crimson Tide on the ropes most of the way until Nick Saban’s squad pulled away for a 17-3 win late. This Saturday, Alabama gets another shot at the Bulls – this time at home – in a Week 2 matchup.

Alabama is in a much different place now than it was for that matchup last year, mainly, at head coach. Saban retired this offeason and was replaced by former Washington head coach Kalen DeBoer, who led the Huskies to the national championship game in 2023.
The quarterback situation is also different. Last year at this time the Tide were still trying to figure out who their starter would be. Jalen Milroe hadn’t emerged yet, and the game against USF was actually the lone game he didn’t play in for ‘Bama during the 2023 season.
Since that game, Milroe has established himself as one of the best quarterbacks in college football. He finished in sixth place in the Heisman voting last season, then came out in Week 1 this year and put up monster numbers in Alabama’s 63-0 season-opening win over Western Kentucky. Milroe completed seven of his nine pass attempts in that game for exactly 200 yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions. He also ran the ball 10 times for 79 yards and two more scores.
