UTSA aim to remain unbeaten in the I-35 Showdown against Texas State
A season after appearing in its first ever bowl game, Texas State goes for its fourth straight win dating back to last season and is in search of its first ever win against Texas-San Antonio today in the I-35 Showdown. UTSA has won nine of its last ten games after a Week 1 home victory over Kennesaw State marking the school’s 50th home win since starting the program back in 2011. The two-time Conference USA Champions have played in four consecutive bowl games and won its first ever bowl game in 2023 defeating Marshall in the Frisco Bowl in December.

UTSA leads the all-time series 5-0 winning twice in San Marcos including a 51-48 double-overtime victory in 2020 in head coach Jeff Traylor’s debut at the helm of the Roadrunners. Under Traylor, Texas-San Antonio is 40-14 and has won nine or more games in each of the last three seasons.
The Texas State defense produced seven sacks in its season opening victory over Lamar last weekend, second most of any team in the Football Bowl Subdivision.
Sophomore quarterback Owen McCown, the son of 18-year NFL veteran Josh McCown, went 28-of-38 for 340 yards and three touchdowns in the season opening win completing passes to ten different receivers including a pair of touchdowns to Devin McCuin.
There is a lot of familiarity between the head coaches of both of these teams as Texas State’s GJ Kinne played for Traylor in 2006 at Gilmer (TX) High School and were both assistants in 2017 at SMU and again in 2018 at Arkansas.
