The defending Southwestern Athletic Conference champion Prairie View A&M Panthers (0-1) host the Texas Southern Tigers (1-0) in the 41st Labor Day Classic on Sunday at Panther Stadium in Prairie View, Texas. The teams compete for the Durley-Nicks Trophy, named for Texas Southern’s all-time winningest coach, Alexander Durley, and Billy Nicks Sr., who led the Panthers to five black college national championships. The game traditionally opens the SWAC schedule. Prairie View A&M comes off a 10-4 season that included a win over Jackson State in the SWAC championship game and a narrow loss to South Carolina State in Cricket Celebration Bowl for the HBCU national championship. The Tigers finished 6-5 a season ago.

Texas Southern opened its season with a 42-30 victory on Aug. 29 over visiting North Carolina Central, coming back from a 24-14 halftime deficit and taking the lead on Jordan Thompson’s 34-yard return of a blocked punt. Cam’Ron McCoy threw for 185 yards and three touchdowns with an interception, with JaQuan McGee catching four passes for 115 yards and two scores. Athean Renfro Jr. powered a running game that picked up 277 yards, finishing the day with 163 yards and a TD on 18 carries. Garfield Lawrence had two of the Tigers’ four sacks and Thompson added 1.5.

Prairie View A&M never led in a 49-30 loss at No. 5 Tarleton State on Aug. 29. Tevin Carter did what he could for the Panthers, throwing for 309 yards and a touchdown and adding 130 yards and a score on the ground. Both teams piled up more than 500 yards of offense in the shootout and neither side committed a turnover. Chase Bingmon scored a touchdown on the ground in the first quarter and Jahbari Kuykendall pulled in a 53-yard scoring pass in the fourth quarter.

The Tigers lead the all-time series 45-35-1 while the Panthers have won 10 of the last 11 meetings, including a 22-21 victory at Texas Southern in last season’s matchup.
