Arizona State and BYU will close out 2024 with a New Year’s Eve game in college basketball to begin Big 12 play.

On Tuesday afternoon, the Arizona State Sun Devils will travel to Utah to take on the Brigham Young University Cougars to kick-off Big 12 play at the Marriott Center. The Sun Devils have got off to a strong start this season and bring an overall record of 9-2 into the start of their conference schedule. The team’s two losses each came against opponents ranked in the Top 10. Most recently, the team played UMass in the Basketball Hall of Fame Classic, winning 78-62 on the road. Basheer Jihad led the scoring efforts for Arizona State with a 20-point performance and Jayden Quaintance finished right behind him with 19 points in the win. Quaintance led on the boards with a game-high 11 rebounds to earn a double-double in the win.

The Cougars have also played well so far this season and are on a three-game win streak with the most recent being a big 103-57 win over Florida A&M to bring the team’s record to 9-2 ahead of Big 12 play. Against the Rattlers, Kanon Catchings led the team’s offense with a 21-point performance and four other Cougars joined him in double figures. Keba Keita finished the game with a team-leading nine rebounds to help the team hold onto possession. All but two rostered Cougars added points to the scoreboard in the win.

BYU and Arizona State have met seven times in their history and the Cougars hold a narrow edge in the all-time series at 5-2. The team’s last meeting took place last season in which BYU earned a 77-49 victory.
