Rhode Island, the No. 10 seed in the A-10 men’s basketball tournament, opens on Wednesday against 15th-seeded Fordham.

Rhode Island (18-12) closed its regular season with a victory, finishing 7-11 in the Atlantic 10 Conference race and claiming a tiebreaker for the 10th seed in the conference tournament. On Wednesday, Rhode Island opens play against No. 15 seed Fordham (11-20), who finished last in the league at 3-15 and has lost eight straight games. Rhode Island last played in the NCAA tournament in 2018, while Fordham’s last visit was in 1992. Wednesday’s winner moves through to the second round and a matchup with No. 7 seed George Washington.

Rhode Island rolled to an 86-67 win over Fordham at home on Saturday afternoon. Sebastian Thomas finished with 20 points and seven assists, Jaden House knocked down 19 points and David Fuchs grabbed 10 rebounds. Thomas averages 17.5 points and 6.1 assists, David Green nets 14.5 points per game and Fuchs gets 7.2 points and 7.5 boards a night.

Jackie Johnson III paced Fordham with 19 points in Saturday’s loss and Japhet Medor tossed in 15. Johnson paces the squad with 18.6 points per game, Medor scores 13.2 points per contest and Romad Dean averages 6.7 points and 5.7 rebounds.

Rhode Island leads the series 43-33 after a split this season. Fordham got an 80-79 win at home on Feb. 5 before Rhode Island held serve at home on Saturday. Archie Miller is 39-54 in his third season at Rhode Island, while Keith Urgo has a 49-48 mark in his third season coaching at Fordham.
