Davidson (17-15) got through the first round of the Atlantic 10 Conference tournament on Wednesday morning and will take on No. 5 seed Saint Louis (18-13) on Thursday afternoon at Capital One Arena in Washington in a second-round matchup. The 12th-seeded Wildcats finished 6-12 in conference play while the Billikens tied with Saint Joseph’s for fifth place at 11-7 and won the tiebreaker. Saint Louis hasn’t been to the NCAA tournament since 2019 while Davidson made its last trip in 2022. The winner on Thursday advances to face No. 4 seed Loyola Chicago in a quarterfinal game on Friday.

A 7-0 spurt late in the second half propelled the Wildcats past 13th-seeded Richmond 69-65 in Wednesday’s first-round clash. Reed Bailey propelled the offense with 25 points, Connor Kuchera knocked in 22 points and Manie Joses blocked three shots. Bailey leads the team with averages of 19.1 points and 6.1 rebounds with Kochera scoring 14.6 points per game.

Isaiah Swope’s 3-pointer tied the game with 27 seconds left in regulation and Robbie Avila hit a dagger 3 with 36 seconds remaining in overtime to lift the Billikens to a 90-88 victory over visiting Duquesne on Saturday night. Gibson Jimerson scored 35 points and Avila went for 22 points and three blocked shots. Jimerson nets 18.3 points per game, Avila gets 17.4 points a night and Kalu Anya averages 6.7 points and a team-high 7.9 rebounds.

Davidson leads series 9-5 after Saint Louis escaped with a 57-56 road victory in the teams’ lone meeting this season on Feb. 25. Josh Schertz is in his first season coaching the Billikens while Matt McKillop has a 48-48 record in his third season with the Wildcats.
