Top-seeded VCU takes on No. 4 seed Loyola Chicago in an Atlantic 10 tournament semifinal on Saturday afternoon

VCU (26-6) played its first game in the Atlantic 10 Conference tournament on Friday and advanced easily. The co-champions of the A-10 during the regular season at 15-3, the top-seeded Rams now take on No. 4 seed Loyola Chicago (22-10) in a semifinal game at Capital One Arena in Washington on Saturday afternoon. VCU last played in the NCAA tournament in 2023 while the Ramblers’ last appearance came in 2022. The winner of Saturday’s game advances to Sunday’s championship game to decide the A-10’s automatic Big Dance bid.

The Rams easily dispatched eighth-seeded St. Bonaventure 76-59 on Friday afternoon. Jack Clark finished with 17 points, Zeb Jackson added 14, Brandon Jennings had 12 points and three blocked shots, Michael Belle snared 10 rebounds in 12 minutes and Max Shulga dished 11 assists. Joe Bamisile leads the team at 15.2 points per game, with Shulga scoring 15.1 points a night and Clark averaging 9.3 points and 6.8 boards.

Loyola Chicago’s lead shrunk to as little as two points in the second half but it held off No. 5 seed Saint Louis for a 72-64 victory in a Friday quarterfinal. Des Watson went for 25 points, Jayden Dawson added 12 and Kymany Houinsou snared 10 rebounds. Dawson scores a team-high 13.5 points per game, with Watson netting 13.0 points per contest and Miles Rubin averaging 9.1 points, 5.3 boards and 2.4 blocks.

VCU remained unbeaten in the series, winning the only meeting of the regular season between the teams 84-65 in Chicago on Jan. 4. Ryan Odom is 50-20 in his second season coaching the Rams while Drew Valentine has an 80-49 mark in his fourth season with the Ramblers.
