The 16th-seeded Alabama State Hornets will begin their quest to complete a Cinderalla story on Thursday with a first round NCAA Tournament game against the No. 1 Auburn Tigers in Lexington, Kentucky. The Hornets have now won seven straight games and will look to extend that to eight games with an upset. The team won the Southwestern Athletic Conference Tournament to advance to a play-in game against Saint Francis (PA) on Tuesday which resulted in a narrow 70-68 victory to go dancing. Amarr Knox led the Hornets’ offense with 16 points while TJ Madlock and CJ Hines also finished in double figures with 11 and 10 points, respectively. The team finished the game shooting 42 percent from the field and 31 percent from long range, but only made one of its four foul shots.

The top-seeded Tigers went into the SEC Tournament favored to win, but came up short in the semifinals against a strong Tennessee team which was seeded fourth. The game ended in a 70-65 defeat, but Auburn still made it into the Big Dance. Johni Broome led the team offensively with a 23-point performance and Miley Kelly chipped in another 13 points. Denver Jones rounded out the double digit scorers with 10 points, but the Tigers still came up short against the Volunteers. Auburn will look to Broome to continue to deliver offensively in tournament play as he leads the team with an average of 18.9 points per game. He is also leading the rebounding efforts with an average of 10.6 boards per game.

Alabama State and Auburn have met a total of six times in their history with the most recent meeting being played in 2023. The Tigers won handily in an 82-62 victory to bring the all-time record to 5-1 in their favor. Tune in on Thursday afternoon to see if the Hornets can pull off the upset to open March Madness.
