Johni Broome and No. 4 ranked Auburn will take the court against RJ Davis and No. 12 ranked UNC on Tuesday.
No. 4 ranked Auburn and No. 12 ranked UNC will face-off in the semifinals of the Maui Invitational presented by Novavax on Tuesday night at the Lahaina Civic Center. The Tigers came into this tournament with an undefeated 4-0 record. They took down a top-five opponent when they beat No. 5 Iowa State in the first round of the tournament. It was a game that all fans enjoyed. Iowa State broke out to a lead, going into halftime with a 16-point lead.
However, they battled back in the second half, showing their resilience with the game going all the way down to the wire. Miles Kelly made a clutch layup to tie the game up at 81, before Johni Broome made a tip-in layup on a Denver Jones missed layup to win the game 83-81. Broome led the game with 21 points and 10 rebounds. Chad Baker-Mazara had 18 points, shooting 3-for-4 from behind the arc.
The Tar Heels came into this game with just one loss on the season through four games. That loss came against the top-ranked team in the country, Kansas. They took on and beat Hawai’i on Friday night and started the Maui Invitational with a game against Dayton Monday. Dayton gave them all they could handle going into halftime down 18 points.
At one point in the second half, UNC trailed by 21 points. The team fought back, scoring 59 points in the second half and winning 92-90. It was the second-largest comeback in UNC basketball history. RJ Davis finished the game with 30 points. Seth Trimble had 27 points and 10 rebounds in the team’s only double-double.
