No. 14 Indiana tries to salvage a win from its trip to the Bahamas when it faces Providence for 7th place at the Battle 4 Atlantis

No. 14 Indiana (4-2) comes off a pair of blowout losses at the Battle 4 Atlantis on Paradise Island in the Bahamas and takes on Providence (5-2) in the tournament’s seventh-place game on Friday inside Imperial Arena. The Hoosiers fell to No. 3 Gonzaga on Thursday after they were blasted by Louisville to open the tournament. The Friars are here after a narrow loss to Oklahoma before Thursday’s loss to Davidson. Mike Woodson is in his fourth season at Indiana and is 67-42, including a 19-14 record last season that did not include a postseason appearance. Providence was 21-14 a season ago and lost in the first round of the NIT in coach Kim English’s first season with the program.

THe Hoosiers led just once and had the score within two before Gonzaga ran off 16 straight points in the first half en route to an 89-73 win. Oumar Ballo had 25 points in the loss while Mackenzie Mgbako added 13. Mgbako leads the team at 16.0 points per game while Ballo averages 14.0 points and 8.2 rebounds.

The Friars fell into a similar first-half hole, trailing by 20 at the break en route to a 69-58 loss to Davidson on Thursday. Jayden Pierre scored 14 points, with Wesley Cardet Jr. tossing in 13 and Oswin Erhunmwunse grabbing 11 rebounds. Pierre and Bensley Joseph each produce 11.9 points per game with Cardet averaging 10.7 points and 5.0 boards.

Indiana is 2-0 against Providence all-time, with the last matchup a 79-58 win in the opening round of the Maui Invitational on Nov. 30, 2020. The tournament was held in Asheville, North Carolina, that year due to travel restrictions related to the COVID-19 pandemic.
