Top-seeded Liberty takes on No. 4 seed Kennesaw State in a C-USA tournament semifinal on Friday

Kennesaw State (19-13), the fourth seed for the Conference USA tournament after a 10-8 regular season mark, advanced on Thursday and will take on No. 1 seed Liberty (26-6) in a semifinal game at Propst Arena in Huntsville, Alabama on Friday morning. The Flames, who were 13-5 in C-USA play, won their quarterfinal game on Wednesday. Liberty is seeking its first NCAA tournament bid since 2021 while the Owls were in the Big Dance in 2023 and moved to C-USA this season. The winner will face either third-seeded Middle Tennessee or No. 2 seed Jacksonville State in Saturday’s championship game.

Kennesaw State lost a 12-point second half lead but reclaimed the advantage for good on Adrian Wooley’s layup with 4:16 remaining, holding off No. 5 seed New Mexico State the rest of the way for an 80-77 win on Thursday night. Simeon Cottle scored 32 points, Wooley added 17 and Braedan Lue finished with 15 points, 10 rebounds and four blocked shots. Wooley gets 18.5 points per game, Cottle nets 18.2 points a night and Rongie Gordon averages 4.6 points and 6.3 boards.

The Flames were too much for eighth-seeded UTEP on Wednesday, cruising to an 81-60 quarterfinal victory. Zach Cleveland paced the attack with 19 points and six assists while Kaden Metheny tossed in 16 points. Taelon Peter leads the team at 13.8 points per game, Metheny puts up 12.9 points per outing and Cleveland averages 11.0 points, 6.3 rebounds and 5.2 assists.

Liberty is 10-3 in the series after the teams split road wins this season. The Flames got a 76-68 road victory on Jan. 30, with the Owls coming back to take an 85-80 decision at Liberty on March 2. Ritchie McKay is 231-105 in the 10th season of his second tour coaching the Flames while Antoine Pettway has a 34-29 mark in his second season at Kennesaw State.
