Third-seeded Middle Tennessee comes off a 2OT win on Thursday, faces No. 2 seed Jacksonville State on Friday

Middle Tennessee (22-10) won’t have a lot of time to recover after going two overtimes to survive its quarterfinal win on Thursday night. The No. 3 seed Blue Raiders take on second-seeded Jacksonville State (21-11) in a semifinal matchup at the Conference USA tournament at Propst Arena in Huntsville, Alabama on Friday afternoon. Both teams finished 12-6 in conference play, with the Gamecocks winning a tiebreaker for the higher seed. Jacksonville State played in the 2022 NCAA tournament while Middle Tennessee is looking to return for the first time since 2017. The winner on Friday advances to meet the survivor of the Kennesaw State-Liberty semifinal earlier in the day.

The Blue Raiders had a 10-point second-half lead disappear and finally won it on Essam Mostafa’s tip-in putback with 16 seconds left to put away No. 6 seed Louisiana Tech 77-75 in two overtimes. Jestin Porter scored 20 points in the win and Jlynn Counter added 16. Porter gets 14.9 points per game while Mostafa averages 14.1 points and 9.1 rebounds.

The Gamecocks took care of No. 10 seed FIU in their quarterfinal on Wednesday, taking a 65-56 victory. Jaron Pierre Jr. finished with 18 points and 11 rebounds while Quel’Ron House tossed in 18 points to go with three steals. Porter puts up 21.7 points per game and Mason Nicholson averages 7.6 points and 7.7 boards.

Middle Tennessee leads the series 5-3 after a split this season, winning at home 81-64 on Jan. 11 before Jacksonville State claimed a 77-63 on its home hardwood on Feb. 6. Ray Harper is 167-123 in his ninth season coaching the Gamecocks while Nick McDevitt has a 93-110 mark in his seventh season with the Blue Raiders.
