Pitt tries to stay undefeated in ACC play when it hosts new conference opponent Cal on New Year’s Day in college basketball.

Pitt faces off against Cal for the very first time as division foes in this New Year’s Day tip-off. The Panthers will be the favorites at home with a 10-2 overall record. They are 7-0 at home and 1-0 in the ACC after beating Virginia Tech on the road in the first week of December. Pitt is trying to get its fourth win in a row and are coming off a huge win against Sam Houston, winning 110-78 last Saturday. Zack Austin and Ishmael Leggett went off in the offensive explosion, both leading the last non-conference game of the season with 23 points apiece.

The 110 points are the second most Pitt has scored at its home arena at the Petersen Events Center. A big reason for the dramatic win was the Panthers’ efficiency from three, hitting 16-of-31 from behind the arc. Pitt started the game off great with a 10-0 run and got up as much as 17 points in the half. Sam Houston closed the gap within eight points by halftime, but Pitt just kept adding fuel to the flame, outscoring its opponent by 20 in the second half. This game will be closer, but the Panthers should be able to stay undefeated in conference play to start the new year.

Cal is going for its first ACC win in program history after losing to Stanford in the first week of December. The Golden Bears are coming off a big 71-50 loss two Saturdays ago against No. 23 San Diego State. Cal was held to just 16 points in the first half and it was hard to rally from there, even though it scored nearly 20 more points in the second half. Jeremiah Wilkinson led the Golden Bears with 13 points, but the team shot just 25.5 percent from the field. It was the 19th loss in a row for Cal against a ranked opponent. Needless to say, they’ll need to shoot at a much higher percentage to pull off this upset.
