The Miners finished 11-21 overall this season and were just 3-15 against teams in the American Athletic Conference. They were the worst team in the conference, earning the worst rank. They were the only team to have to play in a first-round game, taking on the No. 12-seeded Rice, as a sort of play-in game.

Tre Carroll is averaging 12.2 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 1.6 assists per game. The winner of this game will advance to the quarterfinals to take on No. 4-seed Tulane.
