Colorado opens play in the College Basketball Crown against Villanova in a 1st-round matchup on Tuesday

The inaugural College Basketball Crown, a postseason tournament promoted by Anschutz Entertainment and FOX Sports, opened on Tuesday on the Las Vegas Strip and the first round continues on Thursday, with Colorado (14-20) taking on Villanova (19-14). The Buffaloes are one of five Big 12 Conference entries in the 16-team field, with Villanova one of four from the Big East Conference. Colorado has already had two players enter the transfer portal, reserves Courtney Anderson Jr. and Harrison Carrington, with Anderson out for the Crown. Meanwhile, the Wildcats will be coached by interim coach Mike Nardi after Kyle Neptune was fired on March 15 after three seasons.

The Buffaloes finished just 3-17 in the Big 12 this season before making a run to the quarterfinals of the conference tournament last month as the No. 16 seed. Julian Hammond III is the team’s top scorer at 12.5 points per game, with Andrej Jakimovski averaging 10.4 points and 5.0 rebounds.

Villanova was 11-9 in Big East play, earning the No. 6 seed for the conference tournament, and scored a first-round win before falling to UConn in the quarterfinals. Eric Dixon scores 23.0 points per game, with Wooga Poplar averaging 14.5 points and 6.9 boards. The program hired former Maryland coach Kevin Willard to take over the program next season.

Colorado won the only previous meeting between the teams, a 79-56 neutral-site win on Dec. 27, 1999. Tad Boyle has been coaching the Buffs for 15 seasons and is 312-203 with six NCAA tournament bids, most recently in 2024. Nardi played for the Wildcats from 2003-07 and spent three seasons playing in Europe before joining the Villanova staff as director of basketball operations in 2017 and taking on an assistant role the following season.
