Creighton and UConn will battle it out on Friday night for the final spot in the Big East Tournament in the hopes of earning auto bid.

The third-seeded UConn Huskies will look to make their way back to the Big East Tournament final on Saturday to defend their title with a win over the second-seeded Creighton Bluejays on Friday night in the second semifinal at Madison Square Garden. The Huskies took on sixth-seeded Villanova on Thursday night in the quarterfinals, winning 73-56 to advance in tournament play. Alex Karaban led the team both in shooting and on the boards with 18 points and nine rebounds to narrowly miss a double-double in the win. Liam McNeeley finished the game with 12 points while Solo Ball and Samson Johnson rounded out the double digit scorers with 11 points each. The team finished the game shooting 57 percent from the field and 40 percent from long range for a dominant offensive performance that Villanova could not compete with.

The Bluejays opened tournament play against the DePaul Blue Demons on Thursday night, winning 85-81 in a thrilling double-overtime victory to advance in the tournament and improve to 23-9 overall.

Ryan Kalkbrenner had an explosive offensive performance, scoring 32 points to lead the Bluejays while also pulling down nine rebounds to also lead on the boards. The Bluejays shot 43 percent from the field and 29 percent from beyond the arc, certainly not the team’s best performance, but it was enough to get past the Blue Demons.

UConn and Creighton met twice during conference play this season and split the games. Creighton picked up a 68-63 win in the first meeting while UConn took the second game in a 70-66 victory last month. With two very strong teams, the game could go in either direction on Friday.
