Drake (4-0) remained unbeaten with a win on Thursday in the opening round of the Children’s Charleston Classic. On Friday, the Bulldogs face Florida Atlantic (4-2) in the first semifinal of the event at TD Arena in Charleston, South Carolina. The Owls also won on Thursday, picking up their second consecutive win. Drake has played in the last two NCAA tournaments and new coach Ben McCollum came to the school last spring after 15 years and four Division II national championships at Northwest Missouri State. Florida Atlantic also has a two-year run in March Madness, reaching the Final Four in 2023. John Jakus came to Boca Raton in March after seven seasons as an assistant coach at Baylor.

Drake started quickly on Thursday and held off Miami 80-69 in its first-round game. Bennett Stirtz scored 21 points and dished six assists while Daniel Abreu finished with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Stirtz averages 19.3 points and 5.3 assists while Abreu gets 17.8 points per game and Cam Manyawu contributes 8.3 points and 5.5 boards a night.

The Owls got spent the second half streaming to the foul line, hitting 28-of-34 after the break en route to an 86-78 win over Oklahoma State on Thursday. KyKy Tandy had 21 points, with Ken Evans Jr. checking in with 14. Matas Vokietaitis blocked three shots in the victory. Kaleb Glenn scores 15.2 points per game, with Evans and Leland Walker each getting 12.0 points per contest. Baba Miller averages 9.2 points and 7.8 rebounds.

This will be the first meeting between the Bulldogs and Florida Atlantic in more than 20 years. The teams split a home-and-home series in 2001 and 2002, with the Owls winning the most recent matchup on Nov. 22, 2002, 74-62 at Drake.
