Georgetown comes off its 1st loss of the season to face Miami in the consolation game of the Magic Bracket at the ESPN Events Invitational

The Georgetown Hoyas (5-1) battled back from 14 points down with 5:46 to play on Thursday before losing its first game of the season to Dayton in the semifinals of the Magic Bracket at the ESPN Events Invitational. On Friday night, the Hoyas face the Miami Hurricanes (5-2) in the consolation game of the event at State Farm Field House in Kissimmee, Florida. Miami lost its semifinal to No. 9 BYU on Thursday and saw its modest two-game winning streak end.

Georgetown capped a 16-2 run to close regulation when UConn transfer Isaiah Abraham hit a pair of free throws with 35 seconds left before faltering in overtime in its 84-79 loss to Dayton on Friday. Junior Malik Mack led the Hoyas with 24 points, Arizona transfer KJ Lewis added 19 points and seven assists and sophomore Julius Halaifonua scored 16 points. Sophomore Caleb Williams grabbed nine rebounds to go with four points in the defeat.

The Hurricanes led at halftime before BYU got hot after the break, hitting 54.5% of its shots in the second half, including 6-of-10 from 3-point range, to pull away for a 72-62 victory. Miami shot only 33.3% in the second half, leading to its demise. Indiana transfer Malik Reneau finished with 14 points and nine rebounds, freshman Shelton Henderson scored 13 points and Michigan transfer Tre Donaldson added 12 points and three steals.

The Hoyas are 19-12 against Miami all-time and won the last three meetings between the teams, the last coming at home on Feb. 7, 2004 when the Hurricanes still competed in the Big East Conference. Georgetown finished 18-16 last season with a quarterfinal loss in the College Basketball Crown while Miami was 7-24 after a 4-0 start in a campaign marked by the resignation of longtime coach Jim Larrañaga on Dec. 26.
