Youngstown State needs a win over top-seeded Robert Morris to win the Horizon tournament and gets its 1st NCAA tourney bid

Fourth-seeded Youngstown State (21-12) will play in the Horizon League tournament championship game for the first time on Tuesday when it takes on No. 1 seed Robert Morris (25-8) at Corteva Coliseum in Indianapolis. The Penguins, who joined the Horizon League in 2001, have never gone to the NCAA tournament since moving up to Division I in 1981 while the Colonials are looking for their first ticket to the Big Dance since 2015. Youngstown State finished 13-7 in conference play, two games behind Robert Morris’ 15-5 mark.

The Colonials came back from 13 down in the second half, finally putting away No. 6 seed Oakland 79-76 in overtime on Monday night. Kam Woods’ three-point play with 16 seconds left forced overtime. He finished with 23 points and seven assists while Alvaro Folgueiras added 12 points and three blocked shots. Woods averages 15.1 points and 5.1 assists and Folgueiras is good for 14.1 points and 9.2 rebounds per game.

Ty Harper completed a four-point play with 43 seconds left and the Penguins topped No. 2 seed Cleveland State 56-54 on Monday. Siem Uijtendaal finished with 13 points and four steals while Nico Galette grabbed 12 rebounds. with leading scorer EJ Farmer sidelined, Galette averages 12.5 points and 7.3 rebounds with Juwan Maxey dropping 11.0 points per game.

Youngstown State leads the all-time series 16-15 after a split this season. The Penguins opened Horizon play with a 72-58 road win on Dec. 4 before Robert Morris came back for a 72-70 victory at Youngstown on Jan. 22. Andrew Toole is 251-240 in his 15th season coaching the Colonials while Ethan Faulkner is in his first season as head coach at Youngstown State.
