No. 25 Illinois and No. 8 ranked Alabama are heading on the road in the middle of this third week of the regular season in men’s college basketball. In Birmingham, Alabama, these two teams will face-off on Wednesday in the C.M. Newton Classic at Legacy Arena at BJCC. The Crimson Tide, who were the former No. 2 ranked team in the nation, head into this week with a loss already under their belt at 3-1. They opened their season with a 50+ point win over UNC Asheville.

They opened the season with a nine-point win over Arkansas State led by preseason first-team All-American Mark Sears’ 19 points. They stayed at home in Tuscaloosa, Alabama for their first game last week, beating McNeese State by eight points on the back of 22 points from Grant Nelson. At the end of last week, they went on the road for the first time to West Lafayette, Indiana, and lost by nine points to the former No. 13-ranked Purdue. Sears shot just 5-of-15, while Labaron Philon led the team off the bench with 18 points.

The Fighting Illini are undefeated heading into their first ranked game of the season. They opened the year at home in Champaign, Illinois, and beat Eastern Illinois by almost 50 points led by freshman Will Riley’s 31-point performance.

They backed it up at the end of the week with a 32-point win over SIUE, led by 18 points from Tomislav Ivisic. Their only game last week ended in a 12-point win at home over Oakland. Ivisic, who is in his first year with the team, dropped 20 points and six rebounds. Ben Humrichous also had six rebounds with 10 points.
