Liberty looks to reclaim the Conference USA lead when it hosts Kennesaw State at Liberty Arena on Sunday

Liberty (23-5) enters Sunday in a virtual tie for first-place in Conference USA with Jacksonville State, which won at last-place Florida International in double-overtime on Saturday. The Flames, 11-4 in C-USA play, host Kennesaw State (16-13) at Liberty Arena in Lynchburg, Virginia, on Sunday afternoon. The Owls have lost two straight games to fall back to 8-8 in conference action. Liberty last played in the NCAA tournament in 2021 and its last postseason bid came in the 2023 NIT. Kennesaw State was a March Madness participant in 2023 and moved from the Atlantic Sun Conference to C-USA this season.

The Flames led by as much as 17 midway through the second half on Thursday night before holding off visiting Jacksonville State for their sixth straight victory, 59-55. Kaden Metheny led the attack with 13 points while Jayvon Maughmer added 12. Matheny scores 13.1 points per game, Taelon Peter nets 12.8 points a night and Zach Cleveland averages 10.5 points and 6.4 rebounds.

Kennesaw State dropped a 76-61 decision at Florida International on Thursday night, hurting its cause with 20 turnovers. Adrian Wooley tossed in 20 points and Simeon Cottle pumped in 14 in the loss. Wooley puts up 18.4 points per game while Cottle scores 17.8 points per outing and Rongie Gordon averages 4.0 points and 6.2 boards.

Liberty took a 10-2 edge in the all-time series with its 76-68 road win over the Owls on Jan. 30. Ritchie McKay is 224-127 in his second stint with the Flames, whom he coached from 2007-09 before returning in 2015. Antoine Pettway has a 31-29 mark in his second season at Kennesaw State.
