Georgetown begins its season under second-year head coach Ed Cooley when it hosts Lehigh at on Wednesday.

Ed Cooley’s first year at Georgetown was far from a huge success, as the Hoyas were just 9-23 and won just two of their 20 Big East contests. On Wednesday, Georgetown opens its men’s basketball season at McDonough Arena when it hosts Lehigh (0-1). The Hoyas have just two postseason appearances since 2015, a one-and-done in the 2019 NIT and a first round exit from the 2021 NCAA tournament. The Mountain Hawks, meanwhile, haven’t gone to the NCAA tournament since 2012 and their last postseason appearance was in the 2013 CBI. Coach Brett Reed is 276-240 in his 18th season at the helm.

Georgetown returns leading scorer Jayden Epps, who put up 18.5 points per game on just 39.2 percent shooting. But the Hoyas lost five players to the transfer portal, most notably Dontrez Styles (NC State) and Supreme Cook (Oregon). They added Harvard transfer Malik Mack, who put up 17.2 points per game as a freshman, and graduate transer Micah Peavy from TCU and brought in three four-star recruits — Thomas Sorber, Julius Halaifanua and Kayvaun Mulready.

Lehigh tipped off its season on Monday with a 90-46 pasting at Northwestern. The Mountain Hawks trailed 51-15 at the half after shooting just 19.2 percent and missing all 12 of their three-point tries. Reserve Nasir Whitlock scored 11 points, while Tyler Whitney-Sidney added 10.

The Hoyas are 3-1 all-time against Lehigh, with the most recent contest a 68-43 victory in the first round of the 1985 NCAA tournament.
