Akron, the regular-season champion in the MAC, takes on No. 4 seed Toledo in a conference tourney semifinal on Friday.

Akron (26-6) lost just once in Mid-American Conference play this season, earning the top seed for the conference tournament. The Zips advanced with a quarterfinal victory on Thursday and will take on No. 4 seed Toledo (18-14) in a semifinal matchip on Friday night at Rocket Arena in Cleveland. Akron is looking for its second straight MAC tourney title and NCAA tournament bid while the Rockets haven’t gone dancing since 1980, despite winning four straight regular-season conference titles from 2021-24. The winner of this matchup advances to Saturday night’s championship game.

The Zips overpowered No. 8 seed Bowling Green on Thursday in a 96-67 quarterfinal victory. Six players scored in double figures, led by Bowen Hardman’s 17 points while Seth Wilson added 15 points and Sharron Young finished with 12 points and four steals. Nate Johnson leads the team at 13.2 points per game, with Tavari Johnson scoring 12.9 points a night and James Okonkwo averaging 7.2 points and 7.4 rebounds.

Sonny Wilson made one of two free throws with one second left to force overtime before Toledo went on to eliminate fifth-seeded Ohio 90-85 on Thursday. Isaiah Adams went for 26 points, Sam Lewis finished with 21 points and four blocked shots, Wilson posted 15 points and 13 boards and Javan Simmons had 10 points and 11 rebounds. Lewis nets a team-high 16.0 points per game, Wilson puts up 15.3 points per outing and Simmons averages 12.3 points and 6.8 boards.

The Rockets are 42-32 in the series after being swept this season, dropping an 85-78 decision at Akron on Jan. 14 and losing 96-87 at home on March 4. John Groce is 166-87 in his eighth season coaching the Zips while Tod Kowalczyk owns a 296-195 record in his 15th season at Toledo.
