Jaden Clayton and Maine will take the court against Cooper Flagg and No. 7 Duke on Monday night.
Maine will head on the road on kickoff Monday of the NCAA men’s basketball season to take on the No. 7 ranked team in the country from the ACC, Duke, at Cameron Indoor Stadium in Durham, North Carolina. The Blue Devils are one of the most anticipated teams in college basketball this season, with incoming freshman Cooper Flagg set to make his college regular-season debut tonight. Flagg was the most touted recruit coming out of college since LeBron James came out of St. Vincent-St. Mary.
The Montverde Academy product averaged 16.5 points, 3.8 assists, and 7.5 rebounds per game last season. He will join another top recruit in 7-foot-2 big-man Khaman Maluach. The team returns Tyrese Proctor and Caleb Foster while adding several players to the transfer portal. Purdue guard Mason Gillis is one. Gillis averaged 6.5 points, 3.9 rebounds, and 1.7 assists per game last season. They also added Maliq Brown from Syracuse. Brown averaged 9.5 points and 7.2 rebounds for the Orange.
The Black Bears of Maine will take on their only preseason top-25-ranked opponent this season in their first game. The team lost their leading scorer and rebounder from last season, Peter Flilpovity, to New Mexico State. Kellen Tynes remains, though, after averaging 12.6 points, 3.6 rebounds, and 3.6 assists last season as a senior.
They also reclaimed Jaden Clayton, which will be big for this team moving forward. Clayton averaged 9.2 points, 2.8 rebounds, and a team-high 4.0 assists. His role will increase and help Maine immensely. The men’s college basketball season kicks off today, and you won’t want to miss it.
