Southern Conference play will continue on Saturday with a game between Mercer and the Virginia Military Institute in men’s basketball action.

In the SoCon Nexstar Game of the Week, the Mercer Bears travels to take on the Virginia Military Institute Keydets. The Keydets come into Saturday’s game with and overall record of 6-8 and are 0-1 in SoCon play. The team’s last time out resulted in an 84-69 loss to East Tennessee State. In the loss to ETSU, four players finished the game in double figures with Rickey Bradley Jr. and Linus Holmström each scoring a team-high 14 points. Bradley led on the boards with seven rebounds and also added seven assists to the stat sheet. The Keydets were not able to stop a scoring surge from John Buggs III who scored 33 points for ETSU, shooting 10-16 from long range. On the season Augustinas Kiudulas and TJ Johnson led the scoring averages with 14.9 and 14.7 points per game, respectively.

The Bears bring an overall record of 8-6 into Saturday’s game and are 1-0 in conference play so far. The team opened conference play against Chattanooga, earning an exciting 99-94 overtime win. Tyler Johnson and Ahmad Robinson led all scorers with 26 and 25 points, respectively. Robinson earned a double-double with 10 assists and Alex Holt also earned a double-double with 14 points and a team-leading 13 rebounds. On the season, Johnson leads the team with an average of 16.7 points per game with Robinson close behind with an average of 16.6 points per game. 

The last meeting between the two programs took place last season and saw Mercer winning 90-69. In the last 23 meetings, Mercer has won 19 of them and currently have a four-game win streak in the series.
